The Brian Lenihan Jr Memorial Lecture is held annually in Sidney Sussex College in honour of the late former Irish finance minister Brian Lenihan TD (1959-2011), who studied for his LLM at the College. Lenihan worked at the height of the financial crisis in Ireland. The lectures focus on issues of contemporary concern to Ireland and are a highlight of the Modern Irish History Seminar’s academic year.
The first lecture was given in September 2015 by Colin McCarthy (University College Dublin) entitled: ‘Two very different Irish public finance crises 1988 and 2008’. In March 2017 Darragh O’Brien TD (Fianna Fail spokesperson on foreign affairs and Brexit) spoke on ‘British-Irish relations after Brexit.’
